Porter Regional Hospital Invites Moms-To-Be to April Childbirth Classes

Porter Regional Hospital is offering the following childbirth education classes in April:
Breastfeeding Class
This free class, coordinated by an internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant, helps expectant and new parents learn skills for successful breastfeeding. The class is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Apr. 4 or 16 in the Women & Children’s Pavilion classroom at Porter Regional Hospital, 85 East US Highway 6 in Valparaiso. Childbirth Education
Expectant parents can feel prepared for the journey ahead by attending this comprehensive class to learn about pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum, and newborn care. Natural coping methods will be discussed, such as relaxation and breathing, as well as the use of pain medication and epidural anesthesia. A partner or support person is encouraged to attend. Register in your fourth or fifth month of pregnancy and take the classes in your seventh or eighth month. Classes will meet for four consecutive weeks from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Apr. 3, 10, 17, 24, in the Women & Children’s Pavilion classroom at Porter Regional Hospital, 85 East US Highway 6 in Valparaiso. Fast-Track Childbirth Education
Spend one full Saturday in this expedited version of the Childbirth Education class to learn all of the aspects of pregnancy and birth. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Apr. 27, in the Women & Children’s Pavilion classroom at Porter Regional Hospital, 85 East US Highway 6 in Valparaiso. Pre-registration is required. New Beginnings Tours
Learn more about what your birthing experience will be like during a 30-minute tour of the labor, delivery, postpartum, and nursery areas at Porter Regional Hospital. Tours will be held the first two Saturdays of each month at 2 p.m., and the last two Tuesdays of each month at 6 p.m. Upcoming tours are Mar. 2 and 9 or Mar. 19 and 26. Baby Basics
This new class helps parents build confidence around how to nurture baby’s development and ensure newborn’s safety. This free class includes topics like getting ready for baby, bathing, diapering, signs of illness, safety, and newborn behaviors. Great for parents, grandparents and child care providers. Babies and toddlers are welcome. The class meets the second Monday of each month from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Women & Children’s Pavilion classroom at Porter Regional Hospital, 85 E. US Highway 6, Valparaiso. It is free. The next class is Mar. 11. To register, click on Events.
Childbirth Refresher
For couples who have already had a baby, this course is a review of the labor and birth process and provides a refresher on breathing and relaxation techniques. The next class meets Apr. 6, from 3 -7 p.m. in the Women & Children’s Pavilion classroom at Porter Regional Hospital. Pre-registration is required.
Grandparents Class
This class is great for first-time grandparents. It teaches child-care basics and how to use new equipment. It helps with the realization that while mom/infant care standards have changed, the basics of love, support and joy remain the same. The next class is Apr. 2, from 6 -8 p.m. in the Women & Children’s Pavilion classroom. Pre-registration is required.
CPR for Family and Friends
For those wanting to gain knowledge of CPR but do not need to be certified, the American Heart Association program covers all of the basics of CPR and choking for infants, children and adults. The next class is from 6 to 8 p.m., Apr., 11, in the Women and Children’s Pavilion classroom at Porter Regional Hospital, 85 E. US Highway 6, Valparaiso. Pre-registration required. Breastfeeding Drop-in Clinic
This free drop-in clinic is held in the Women and Children’s Classroom from 3-5pm. Upcoming clinics are Apr. 4 or 16. Bring your baby and come as often as you would like. Mothers are encouraged to drop by for any breastfeeding or latch issues, infant weight checks, and open discussion on any breastfeeding related concerns. During the clinic, mothers are encouraged to nurse their babies. Make sure your baby comes hungry! We can get a before and after weight to measure how much baby is eating with each feed. Lactation consultants are available to address any basic questions and concerns related to breastfeeding. Feel free to use our complimentary valet parking.
