Breast Health
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. Southside Physicians Network and our hospitals offer a variety of diagnostic imaging services that can help identify breast issues before they become larger health problems. From digital mammography to breast MRI and stereotactic biopsy, we are dedicated to keeping women healthy, educated and informed.
Our breast health services include:
Nipple-sparing mastectomies – During a nipple-sparing mastectomy, the nipple, areola and skin are left intact. Breast tissue is removed from an incision that is hidden under the crease of the breast. While not every woman is a candidate, this type of mastectomy offers the most natural look for reconstruction.
Skin-sparing mastectomies – During a skin-sparing mastectomy, the surgeon removes the nipple and areola and removes breast tissue through that smaller incision. The rest of the breast skin is left intact to provide the best shape for reconstructive surgeries. There is an option to recreate the nipple and areola afterward, and many women can also choose to get a tattoo of the nipple and areola.
Simple mastectomies – A simple mastectomy involves removal of the breast, nipple, areola and skin, leaving a woman’s chest flat. Women have this option if they choose not to undergo breast reconstruction immediately after having their breast removed. However, there is still an option to reconstruct the breast at a later time if the woman changes her mind.
Partial mastectomies – A partial mastectomy, sometimes called a lumpectomy or breast-conserving surgery, removes only the tumor and tissue around the tumor. If the tissue that needs to be removed is a large area, women can choose to have surgery on their other breast for an even appearance.
Immediate breast reconstruction – If you have chosen plastic surgery, we can perform this too. Southside Physicians Network offers implant-based breast reconstruction. A small number of women are also candidates for an autologous (flap) reconstruction, where your own skin, muscle and fat is taken from your abdomen or back to create a new breast.
Breast reduction – When medically necessary for issues such as chronic pain or difficulty being active, this procedure may be an option. Breast reduction surgery removes excess fat, tissue and skin.
Digital mammography -
Mammography is an X-ray exam of the breasts to screen for or diagnose breast cancer. Southside Physicians Network offers digital imaging technology for mammograms, allowing results to be displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor and transmitted to other physicians or specialists if needed. Digital mammography helps radiologists to zoom in on particular areas or change brightness or contrast for even greater visibility, and results can be read immediately.
Breast MRI -
Along with mammography, breast MRI can be an effective diagnostic tool. Breast MRI is often used for women who are at greater risk of developing breast cancer or who have dense breast tissue or implants — cases in which mammography is less effective at detecting abnormalities.
Breast ultrasound (sonography) -
A breast ultrasound is often used to further evaluate an abnormality found during a mammogram. Ultrasound allows doctors to view the area closest to the chest wall, which can be difficult to see using mammography. This technology also helps doctors determine whether a breast lump is filled with fluid (a cyst) or is a solid mass.
Stereotactic biopsies -
When a lump or abnormal area is detected during a breast screening, a biopsy can determine whether cells are cancerous. A stereotactic biopsy combines advanced imaging technology — such as MRI, mammography or ultrasound — with minimally invasive techniques including fine needle aspiration or a vacuum powered device, to obtain tissue samples.
