Grandview Medical Center Opens Alabama’s First of Its Kind Image-Guided Advanced Endoscopy Suite

Birmingham, AL – Grandview Medical Center has opened a new advanced endoscopy suite. This suite utilizes a fluoroscopy unit that provides superior imaging while dramatically reducing radiation exposure to patients and staff.
The new fluoroscopy unit, the first of its kind in Alabama, is the only unit with features developed specifically for AI image-guided endoscopic GI procedures.
Fluoroscopy is used in several endoscopic procedures, like endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). It aids in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the bile duct and pancreas. Fluoroscopy is also used to assist with the placement of stents in the GI tract relieving blockages due to benign conditions and cancers of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon.
The new technology offers several advantages over conventional, non-AI systems. For patients and staff, the unit automatically reduces radiation exposure. This is an important factor in procedures for improving safety and avoiding side effects attribute to radiation. The advanced image quality will lead to shorter procedure times while under anesthesia and enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the procedure.
“We are very happy to have this brand-new fluoroscopy unit available in our lab, as we continue to care for patients from all parts of Alabama and surrounding states,” said Mohannad Dugum, director of advanced endoscopy at Grandview. “This unit utilizes artificial intelligence capabilities to provide the highest quality imaging for the advanced GI procedures we perform, while keeping radiation exposure at a minimum. We now have the highest quality unit with the best safety profile. This brings tremendous value and reaffirms our commitment to excellence.”
The interventional lab at Grandview’s advanced endoscopy center is used for therapeutic gastroenterology procedures including ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound.
