Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomies Now Performed by Springs OB/GYN
12/18/2017
Lancaster, SC (December 2017) – Women requiring a hysterectomy now have the option for minimally invasive surgery by a local obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) physician. Lisa Semple, DO, of Springs Women’s Health, began performing total laporascopic hysterectomies at Springs Memorial Hospital this year. Dr. Semple, a board certified OB/GYN physician, is a member of the active medical staff at Springs Memorial Hospital.
A laparoscopic hysterectomy requires only a three small incisions, compared to a traditional abdominal hysterectomy, which is done through a larger incision. A camera is used to look inside the patient to assist the surgeon during the surgical procedure. The entire surgery is done through small incisions with uterus being “delivered” vaginally. The benefits include a shorter hospital stay, less blood loss, less scarring, less post-operative pain and decreased recovery time.
A laparoscopic hysterectomy usually requires a one night stay (or less), whereas an abdominal hysterectomy may requires a patient to spend 2-3 nights in the hospital. The recovery period for this laparoscopic procedure is three to four weeks or less, compared to six weeks of recovery following an abdominal hysterectomy.
The risks of blood loss and infection are also lower with a laparoscopic hysterectomy. In experienced hands, laparoscopic hysterectomy takes about the same length of time as an abdominal hysterectomy and involves no greater risk.
“Women should be aware that they have options and should discuss this option with their OB/GYN,” said Dr. Semple. “It is a wonderful that women have this option now, so close to home.”
