Cardiac Rehabilitation
Springs Memorial Hospital's cardiac rehabilitation professionals provide a customized approach designed to meet each patient’s unique needs. We are members of the South Carolina Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and our program is eligible for national certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).
Cardiac rehabilitation consists of three phases of active participation by the patient in his or her recovery from heart disease.
Phase One: The first phase takes place in the hospital and consists of the initial educational aspects of the program, progressive self-care and light physical activity.
Phase Two: The second phase takes place in our dedicated rehabilitation center. Patients should enter this phase as soon as medically feasible following discharge from the hospital. The educational activities are expanded, as more emphasis is placed on the exercise portion of the program. Phase II participants come to the center three (3) days per week for 12 weeks of medically prescribed and monitored exercise.
The cost of Phase II is reimbursed by many insurance carriers, including Medicare, within individual contract limitations. A physician, registered nurse, and an exercise specialist supervise the program. Registered nurses, registered dietitians and vocational counselors work with each patient to help him or her learn how to make any recommended changes in life-style. Support is provided in the areas of increasing physical activity, improving nutrition , stress management, managing weight , and in returning to work when appropriate. Assistance with individual special needs can also be provided. The goal is to reduce a patient’s risk factors for continuing heart disease, thereby decreasing the risk of re-hospitalization.
Phase Three: Phase three, lasting for six to 12 months following Phase Two, is an option for those who want to continue in a supervised setting. All of the services of Phase II are available, but the medical monitoring is not provided. A fee is charged for participation in Phase III.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Similar to the cardiac rehabilitation program, this service provides medically prescribed and monitored exercise therapy for patients suffering from various respiratory conditions and preparing for, or recovering from pulmonary surgical intervention. Supplemental oxygen is available for use during exercise when requested by a physician. The appropriate educational services are also available to pulmonary patients. Fees are charged for this service.
A physician referral is required for participation in the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Medical records must also be provided.
