Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is a healthcare specialty that includes the evaluation, assessment, and treatment of individuals with limitations in functional mobility. If you have an injury or illness that results in physical impairment or loss of function, a physical therapist can help. Physical therapists treat people across the entire lifespan. Regardless of age, if you have impaired mobility, a physical therapy evaluation may be warranted to offer treatment and a strategy to improve function. Physical therapists can help improve or restore the mobility you need to move forward with you life. If you are looking for a possible alternative to surgery and/or pain medication, consider a physical therapist.
Physical therapists use many different techniques to help you decrease pain, decrease stiffness, improve motion and strength, and improve mobility. Physical agents such as heat, ice, and/or electrical stimulation may be used. Manual techniques are often used to improve mobility. Therapeutic exercise is used to help people gain range of motion, increase strength, and improve function.
What Should I Expect From Physical Therapy?
At your physical therapy visit, your physical therapist will review your medical history and do a physical evaluation. Depending on your diagnosis or symptoms, your therapist may evaluate your flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, posture, and/or heart rate and respiration. Your therapist may look at how you walk or get up from lying down (functional activities), along with how you use and position your body as you perform activities (body mechanics). The therapist will work with you to decide on your goals for physical therapy and the best treatments to achieve them. You may or may not begin your actual therapy at the first visit. Your physical therapist can also help by developing a fitness and wellness oriented program tailored to your specific needs. In most cases, part of your physical therapy will be education. Your therapist may teach you about a home exercise program, proper body mechanics, and the use of any special equipment you may need. He or she will then periodically check on how well you are transferring the skills you learn in therapy to daily activities at home and work. Because physical therapists are experts in knowing how the obdy works, they are able to design personalized treatment plans to reduce the risk of injury whether in everyday activities or sports.
