Lymphedema Management
Treatment for patients suffering from lymphedema is now available at Springs Physical Therapy. Lymphedema, also known as lymphatic obstruction, is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling that can affect one or multiple extremities.
The lymphatic system returns excess fluid from the body into the bloodstream. As such, any blockage of this system will result in swelling of the affected limb. Symptoms of lymphedema may include a feeling of heaviness or fullness and aching pain in the affected area. In advanced lymphedema, there may be the presence of skin changes such as discoloration and wart-like hyperplasia. All of these changes lead to an increased risk of infection and difficulty performing everyday tasks.
Lymphedema affects approximately 140 million people worldwide
Lymphedema may be inherited. This is referred to as Primary Lymphedema. Secondary lymphedema is caused by injury to the lymphatic vessels. It is most frequently seen after lymph node dissection, surgery and/or radiation therapy, in which damage is caused during the treatment of cancer. Breast cancer treatment is the #1 cause of lymphedema in the US. In many patients, this condition does not develop until months or even years after their cancer treatment has concluded.
