3D Mammography
Breast tomosynthesis, also called 3D mammography, helps detect breast cancer in its earliest most treatable stages by producing a 3D view of breast tissue enhancing the images radiologists review.
These detailed images help doctors identify and characterize individual breast structures without overlapping tissue, which can happen in two-dimensional exams. This overlap is a reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal.
When radiologists receive the images after a 3D mammogram, the computer converts those pictures into a stack of thin layers so the patient’s tissue can be reviewed one layer at a time. Fine details become more visible and are no longer hidden by the tissue above or below.
3D mammography also is an option for women with dense breast tissue and can reduce callbacks – or the number of women asked to return to the hospital for additional testing.
The 3D exam is similar to a conventional 2D mammogram. Compression time is just 3.7 seconds and offers a low-dose radiation exposure.
Ultrasound Breast Biopsy
Breast biopsy is performed to remove cells from a suspicious area in the breast to determine a diagnosis. Image-guided biopsy is performed when the abnormal area in the breast is too small to be felt, making it difficult to locate.
An ultrasound biopsy uses a special machine with sound waves to help guide the instruments to the site. The result is a shorter examination time that greatly improves patient comfort and convenience.
