Physical Therapy
Physical and occupational therapy help to correct physical dysfunction in order to maximize quality of life. Therapists are trained to evaluate and treat sources of pain or limitations. During the initial evaluation, a therapist will develop and execute a plan of care consistent with evidence-based practice to help patients return to sports, work or daily activities.
During each visit, a therapist will utilize techniques such as therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, functional training, dry needling, biofeedback and other treatments as needed in order to assist each patient with reaching their goals and returning to their prior functional level. Therapists will also prevent further loss of mobility by developing wellness and home exercise programs for a healthier, more active lifestyle. Among the goals PT or OT can help accomplish are:
- Reduce or eliminate pain. Ultrasound, taping, dry needling and manual therapy can help relieve pain and restore function.
- Avoid surgery. Visiting a PT at the onset of pain improves the possibility of healing an injury, eliminating the need for surgery.
- Save healthcare costs. Physical therapy saves consumers with low back pain an average of $2,700 if started within 14 days after an injury.
- Prevent or recover from a sports injury. PTs can design appropriate recovery or prevention exercises specific to your sport.
- Improve mobility. Individual care plans, from strengthening exercises to properly fitted crutches, can maximize your mobility.
- Recover from a stroke. PTs/OTs can improve gait, balance, mobility and help strengthen weakened parts of the body to improve function
- Manage women’s health. PTs can provide specialized treatment for pelvic health, pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, pregnancy and post-partum care.
