In Arkansas, breast cancer is the most frequently occurring cancer for women. Northwest Health provides services to educate women on breast health, encourages self-exams and provides technology to assist women in securing the mammography screenings that are recommended. Northwest Health’s facilities utilize imaging technology that can detect breast cancer at the earliest stages, when treatment can be most effective.
3D Mammography (Breast Tomosynthesis)
Northwest Health offers breast tomosynthesis, commonly called 3D mammography, for breast cancer screening. Breast tomosynthesis produces a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue, which helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue. This technology has been shown in clinical studies to be superior to digital mammography.
Providing sharper images, 3D mammography can benefit most screening and diagnostic mammography patients. It is especially valuable for women receiving a baseline screening, those who have dense breast tissue and women with a personal history of breast cancer.
The 3D mammography exam complements standard 2D digital mammography and is performed at the same time with the same equipment. There is no additional compression required, and it only takes a few seconds longer for each view. Very low X-ray energy is used during the exam: just about the same amount as a traditional mammogram done on film.
During the 3D part of the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple breast images. Then, a computer produces a 3D image of the breast tissue in one-millimeter slices, providing greater visibility for the radiologist to see breast detail in a way never before possible. They can scroll through images of your entire breast like pages of a book.
An order from a physician or qualified healthcare provider is required for a mammogram. All mammogram reports will be sent to the physician/provider, and the patient is responsible for follow-up. 3D mammography may not be covered under all insurance plans/providers. Ask your doctor if a 3D mammogram is right for you.
Digital Mammography
Digital imaging technology is also available for mammograms. With digital technology, radiologists can zoom in on particular areas or change brightness or contrast for even greater visibility, and results can be read immediately. It often offers numerous benefits to women, including:
- Improved accuracy of screening exams, especially for women with dense breast tissue.
- Less radiation exposure.
- Greater image quality, reducing the need for repeat exams.
