Robotic Surgery at Northwest Medical Center – Springdale
Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery that uses computer-assisted technology to aid in surgical procedures. Rather than operating on patients through large incisions, surgeons use miniaturized surgical instruments that fit through a series of small incisions, which often reduce scarring and recovery time.
Robotic surgery may offer several benefits to patients, such as:
- Less pain and scarring
- Lower risk of infection
- Shorter hospital stays
- Quicker recovery
Northwest Health was the first health system in Northwest Arkansas to utilize robotic-assisted surgery. The surgeons at our dedicated Robotic Surgery Institute at Northwest Medical Center – Springdale can use surgical robots to treat urological, gynecological and colorectal conditions as well as perform other general surgery procedures.
Among the general surgeries that can be performed using the robotic technology are:
- Gallbladder surgery
- Hernia repair – inguinal and ventral
- Proctectomy (removal of all or part of the rectum)
- Rectopexy (surgery to put rectum back into normal position)
- Small bowel surgery
- Lower anterior colon resections
- Right colectomy
Among the urologic surgeries that can be performed using the robotic technology are:
- Cyst removal (surgery to remove cyst from kidney)
- Cystectomy (bladder surgery)
- Partial and total nephrectomy (removal or partial removal of a kidney)
- Prostatectomy (surgery to remove all or part of the prostate gland)
- Pyeloplasty (surgical reconstruction of the renal pelvis)
- Sacrocolpopexy (repair of pelvic organ prolapse)
- Ureteral implantation (fix the tubes that connect the bladder to the kidneys)
Among the types of gynecological procedures that can be performed with the robotic technology are:
- Hysterectomy for benign conditions (removal of uterus)
- Hysterectomy for cancer (removal of uterus)
- Pelvic organ prolapse surgery
- Myomectomy (surgery to remove uterine fibroids)
- Endometriosis resection (removal of lining of the uterus)
