Breast Biopsy
Your doctor may recommend a breast biopsy if a suspicious area was seen on your mammogram. To determine whether a growth is cancerous or not, a biopsy (tissue sample) is extracted for further testing.
How is the procedure conducted?
The procedure is conducted under local anesthesia although you are awake during the procedure. While in a lying down position, two or three images are taken and a small needle is inserted to take the tissue sample. There should be little to no pain during the procedure and over-the-counter pain medication may be taken if needed following the procedure. There is minimal recovery time needed.
How do I get my results?
Once the pathologist has determined the results of your biopsy, a radiologist will communicate them to you.
Upright Breast Biopsy Available
The Northwest Breast Imaging Center at Willow Creek and Siloam Springs Regional Hospital both offer an alternative to traditional breast biopsy at their locations.
Utilizing 3D breast biopsy technology, patients may remain upright in a seated position or lie on their side during the procedure. While in this position, technologists will compress the breast, similar to a mammogram, to pinpoint the biopsy location. The physician is then able to take a small tissue sample. By using the 3D technology, the physician is able to take less samples resulting in less exam time and radiation dose compared to other X-ray breast biopsy procedures.
The 3D component makes it easier for physicians to see small nodules and calcifications which is key to treating patients with dense breast tissue.
